Our Curriculum covers a broad range of subjects:
Language
The children move towards reading and writing through practical activities. Letters are taught so that both sound and shape are associated. The child is encouraged to form words by combining sounds and mark-making is encouraged from the start using a wide range of equipment.
Mathematics
The child is introduced to varied exercises in number recognition and is taught to become familiar with the use of mathematics in everyday situations. The children develop such understanding by using concrete materials.
Sensorial
The children are encouraged to use their senses more fully and with greater discrimination. The sensorial learning materials help the child to experience shape, size, volume, sound, touch and colour.
Practical Life
Practical exercises deal with everyday activities such as polishing, folding, sorting and pouring and self-care tasks. This encourages the child’s independence and a willingness to care for the environment.
General Studies
Children are encouraged to observe nature and all classrooms have access to the outdoors. Children discover other cultures and customs through a rich and varied range of cultural materials. Each nursery is equipped with a computer which the children are encouraged to use in various ways, for example matching and sorting, shapes and pictures, word-building and number games and general mouse control.
Music and Movement
Dance, singing and percussion are important parts of the week’s activities. A range of musical instruments is introduced. The children are encouraged to express themselves through drama and role-play situations.
Art and Craft
The children study one main project per term. The project work offers them opportunities to experiment with different mediums for example paints, modelling clay, chalks and other materials.
Outings
The children are taken on informative and enjoyable outings to such places as London Zoo, Syon Park, Legoland and Bockett’s Farm for which parental involvement is particularly appreciated.
Lunches
Children bring in their own packed lunches and drinks and biscuits are supplied by the school for morning break although children are welcome to bring their own juice and snack if they wish or if they have particular dietary needs. We also provide fruit and milk.
People whose work and experience will interest the children are invited to come and talk to them – the local librarian for example. Parents who may be able to offer help and their own experience of life are encouraged to take part in our activities.
A good and open rapport between parents and teachers is fostered and parents are able to discuss their child’s progress with their child’s key teachers during twiceyearly parent evenings or at other times by arrangement. Parents are given a written report at the end of the summer term. In addition lists of the children’s weekly activities are posted on our noticeboard and are available to parents via our website. Staff at The Roche Nursery Schools are qualified teachers and are assisted by Montessori student teachers who are completing their teaching practice at the school. Parents are warmly invited to visit the nursery schools and appointments are arranged so that they can see the children during the school day.
